I'm pretty sure that this is a large california piece. it looks like some Gladding McBean pieces i've seen, but not marked. it's in beautiful condition though! i got it at the Alameda flea market today. it's 15 inches long by 11 inches wide. there are three kiln stand marks on the bottom.
Very nice simple shell design...I have a giant clam shell with a salmon interior by Metlox "Poppy Trail" maybe yours is by them as well . :)

Yes, Metlox.
Both this and the piece referred to by mikelv are from what is called "the 700 series" of low bowls produced by Metlox between 1939 and 1942. Your clam shell bowl was also available in a smaller 12 1/2" size. The other is called a "Conch Shell bowl" and came in one size only. All pieces of the 700 Line were available in several colors and color combinations.
thank you mikelv and artfoot! you are just a fount of knowledge artfoot! i've learned so much from you in the short time you've been on cw!
Very nice piece. I will defer to the more knowledgeable members, they have numbers and statistics.
I would call it an ashtray because that's what I do. It gives me justification to collect other categories.
thanks dammitchris! this is way too big for an ashtray. that's a footlong ruler in the middle of it.
