Louis the Pious was the son of Charlemagne and his successor as Holy Roman Emperor. This silver denarius or denier was struck c. 822 - 840 AD, the obverse features a small cross pattée with a pellet in each quadrant surrounded by the Latin inscription +HLUDOVVICUS IMP. The reverse features a temple surmounted by a cross surrounded by the inscription XPISTIANA RELIGIO. Louis was not as good an emperor as his father, but his coinage is considerably more affordable than that of Charlemagne. Louis is one of my 38th great-grandfathers, as Charlemagne is one of my 39th, so this coin fits well into my genealogical numismatics hobby :-)
