I went to a local thrift shop where I hadn't been for more than a month. I picked through all the jewelry and found this choker necklace hanging on a hook in between all sorts of costume jewelry. I now know what my necklace is made from, thanks to some sleuthing by fellow CWers.

    Thank yooooooou!!

      Perhaps bone?

you always have something interesting!...looks organic to me

TA - I wondered it if might be bone, but it doesn't seem to be the color of bone. I have a huge polished bone necklace and compared the two - the choker is much creamier in color.

lentilka - looks organic to me, too, in a certain type of light.

Maybe tagua nut, aka vegetable ivory :-D

@kyra, I'm just not sure that it would have the durability for the clasp.

@TA and kyra - I am surprised that a nut would feel so cold and heavy....

YIKES! I just looked at another necklace made from tagua nuts on Ruby Lane:

Here's the whole link from Ruby Lane showing the other necklace:

Not sure too if convenient for the screw clasp, T A, but vegetable ivory is rather solid.

The one in your link is ivory :-)

I also see that these nut beads are sold wholesale for jewelry making...kind of puts a hole in my boat...LOL!
    13. Efesgirl Efesgirl, 8 years ago
@kyra - I've never even heard of vegetable ivory before today. I wonder if the ones sold for jewelry making are condensed "scraps" of these nuts rather than whole nuts...I don't have a clue.

@kyra - hmmm! the appraisal is shown there and it lists the necklace as being vegetable ivory. Did the appraiser made a boo-boo? :-)))))

I thought seeing lines as in animal ivory...
But ready to bow in front of a gemmology appraisal :-D

Some cheap ones on aliexpress are surely cheating material...

This eco friendly material is really beautiful, and so similar to elephant tusk!
    16. Efesgirl Efesgirl, 8 years ago
@kyra - I think so, too - reconstituted materials. The beads are too perfect. My necklace has imperfect beads.

Yep, CW is the place to find the answers to your mysteries! I like that the necklace has the threaded clasp out of the same material, really nice looking! :^)

bill - I always look for necklaces with such clasps. Not so easy to find these days.
