A Vinnies find on Tuesday was this pot that I was sure was West German when I first saw it on the shelf. But when I picked it up I realized that it was hand thrown and decorated.
The detailed work on this pot is extremely uniform. It has a woven fabric look ... certainly the glaze colours have been woven to create the patter in the lower areas. The sgraffitto work higher on the vase is extraordinary. The weight of the vase told me that it was not West German. But what was it?
It had to come home. I saw the signature on the base: HAND MADE / Garrett / N.S.W..
An Australian pot. The 'N.S.W.' is short for New South Wales, my home state. The Garrett name was familiar but I needed to get it home to check out the Facebook Australian Pottery group to find out more.
It certainly had a Sixties feel to it.
Judith Pearce at Bemboka has done some work on this pottery and the later spin-off pottery by Joan Sayers the daughter of the Garretts.
John Garrett (1915-1984) was an Englishman who emigrated to Australia with his wife Phyllis in 1950. He had done some art study in England but when he arrived in Sydney he studied at Auburn Technical College and in 1959 set up a ceramics pottery in nearby South Granville. The pots made there bear the incised mark on my vase. His wife Phyllis worked there with him and later his daughter Joan Sayers.
They family later moved to Queensland in 1980 and John died there in 1984.

Interesting they were at Granville. There must be lots of good clay around there; the Goodlet and Smith Brickworks at Merrylands, Studio Dybka Tichy in Parramatta; and one more I can't recall.
