i'm pretty sure that this is by California potter Dorothy Kindell - 1940s, i think. it's in perfect condition and it stands a little over 6" high. i've seen pics before, but this is the first time i've found one and it is impressive.

The Dorothy Kindell "Strip Tease" mugs inspired many imitators. As far as I can tell, this is not a Kindell design but surely "inspired by" them. The red/brown clay body makes me think this is likely Japanese (that's not a bad thing) but could be Canadian or something else entirely. I've never seen a Kindell piece on anything other than a white clay body.

These "Strip Tease" style mugs can be found marked "Japan" and "Brayton Laguna (designed by Ferdinand Horvath)" - I wouldn't be surprised if there were many makers.

Listen to them - I am no expert, I've just handled a lot of this stuff over the years.

As often happens, I was looking for something else and ran into this - http://www.justartpottery.com/altimages.asp?pottery_detail=23828
It is from a set of six different mugs entitled "Women from Around the World" by Riddell. Researching that a little should give you some more information about your mug.
