What is this? I recently bought this at an Early American Auction. It was reported to be of the time period of the Revolutionary War, a grinder of " coffee or spices" the listing said. It stands 4-1/2" High and 1-1/2" dia. Made of brass. No identifying markings of manufacturer. It has a hook like thing with a tamper at the other end. At the end of the handle is a paddle or chopper like thing. The housing has a small whole in the side looking like something could exit. The top knob turns freely and moves up and down like a
"vega-a-matic". My friend says it could be a tobacco grinder for snuff? Can anybody help solve my mystery item? I would like to get a positive I.D. if anybody knows what this is or has seen one before. Many thanks in advance.
