this piece is the most interesting piece i found yesterday. The 2 ends are carved bamboo and in between are very intricate etchings on leaves of some kind. i can't believe the incredible detail in this! and what interesting little scenes too. this is a total guess, but i imagine that this is some kind of a good luck charm for a couple getting married. their names can be etched into the two blank squares on the top leaf and this can be hung in the couple's home to bring them good luck, prosperity, etc...

isn't it? i can't believe someone can carve/etch so finely and detailed on such a tiny scale! there is enough detail here to fill 12 very long walls w/ murals!
Pattachitra is a traditional art form from Odisha that is based on Hindu mythology. The name is derived from Sanskrit word for cloth “patta” and picture “chitra”, denoting cloth-based scroll painting. The art work is specially inspired by Lord Jagannath and the Vaishnava cult and all the colours used are naturally obtained. Since the beginning of the Pattachitra culture, Lord Jagannath (an incarnation of Lord Krishna) has been the major source of inspiration, while also including motifs of folklore.
These paintings, ‘pattachitras’, resemble the old murals in Odisha especially those found in the religious centres of Puri, Konark and Bhubaneshwar region, which date back to the 5th century BC.
i've looked at quite a few of these and none of the ones i saw were anywhere near as detailed and beautifully done as this one. it's amazing - look closely!
