My brother owned one of these classic anti-war posters as a student at UNH back in the 1960s. I tracked this one down in an internet auction. This iconic 1960s anti Vietnam poster is by the legendary Seymour Chwast… produced in 1967 (or 1968) protesting the bombing of Hanoi in Vietnam….Seymour Chwast’s posters reside in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Philadelphia Museum of Art; the Library of Congress, in Washington, D.C., etc. "The Seymour Chwast Archive" describes this 28 x 40" poster thusly:
“The broadside and the poster are traditional media of protest. I am simply continuing the practice.”
— Seymour Chwast, The Left Handed Designer, 1985
Uncle Sam, a traditional symbol of American patriotism, is subverted to protest the United States’ ongoing involvement in the Vietnam War.
Good to see somebody perpetuating the cause.
Great poster.
