Please tell me about this trunk.
I would like to restore. Need lock assembly for front. Where can I get that? What was the most likely color for the hardware. I can see some of the embossed metal had a whitish background with red vines/flowers. Any info appreciated.
You're at the right place. Just wait a bit.
well lets see if I can help you without getting jumped on, first thing the tin is called Grecian pattern, it seems to have been the most popular of the embossed tins, I have seen a lot of red vine and yellow background, this appears to have been red with light blue, at least that's what it looks like. strange trunk to me, looks like the ends were covered with something other than tin, looks like paper maybe, and I've never seen handles mounted into a slat like that, but that's the way with trunks, just when you think you've seen it all something new comes along. needs a lot of TLC, you can find a lock on line several web sites or ebay, slat clamps were probably silver in color, lock and latches black, but lock could of been brass also. Trunk is probably from around 1890's to 1910 or so. hope this helps, anything else just ask, good luck.
I need to get a lock too.
Based on greendogs remark that it is rare I would not restore this if that means refinishing etc. I am an original condition kind of guy though.
Restoration takes time and your time may be better spent buying one in the condition that you like.
Hold on there fortapache, I didn't say it was a rare trunk, just that I haven't seen one made like this, that doesn't make it rare. In my opinion this is a very common looking trunk in both tin and hardware, and is in need of refinishing or restoration.
Thanks greendog. You are correct the ends and back were covered with black paper, I managed to get the remnants of that off today. Thanks for the info. I was just wondering how to order a lock once I find a site. I have never seen what the lock should look like. Any help appreciated.
Hey Trunkortreat, with the lock being gone its a guess as to what lock it had on it, but with the hole in front being square I'am sure it had a square face plate style lock. if you get on line and type in antique trunks, look for trunks that look similar to yours and look at the locks to get an idea of what you need it should have a square face plate, after that its just a matter of finding one which should not be to hard I see them all the time. check Muffs antique hardware, but there are others, type in antique trunk hardware. I will post a trunk that i have that is similar to yours along with a lock that i think you need, check it out.
