I had a snoop around on the web and found a site which sells acrylic beads which look just like these. Link posted below.
Nice hand knotting between each bead. I figure this necklace is either pre-1990 or made by someone after that date using older hardware.

What a gorgeous piece! I love the shape of the piece and the lacquered zebra pattern.
