Looks like it's made from brass or copper, looks like a compass bit not sure. Got it from my grandpa after he passed away.

It is a compass with sights for keeping on a chosen track. Lots in the military.

      Is it worth any value?

To military collectors, if it is military as appears. Read the CW bylaws. No selling buying or appraising

Notice three things about this compass. 1) it mounts on a tripod and has two levels so it is used in an application where it needs to be fixed and precise. 2) the E and W are reversed from where they should be. This is so that when you sight through the sights you can read the degrees as the deviation from east and west rather than actual degrees of heading. 3) the degrees don't go from 0 to 360. They go from 0 to 90 and back to 0 in BOTH directions. I believe this compass is specifically designed to read the magnetic force field of the earth to determine deviation from actual magnetic north in any given area. It can be critical to know where the geology of the earth causes a deviation in normal compass readings (aircraft navigation) so this is a surveying tool to get that information. (That's why it is marked "Field Force". Duh!) :-) Now in deference to BB2 I'm not going to appraise your compass, but conversationally, I've seen similar instruments sell for up to $150.

Wow that's awesome! I could not figure what it was for nothing, my grandpa was really into astrology, he was a science professor for 30 years, and served in ww2. Knew it was from one of those subjects lol. Thank you so much

I have something similar Kelvin & Hughes 1917 Bronton surveyors tool with compass, locking device and sighting bar.
