This is a interesting brooch, I've never seen anything like this from Bernard Instone. If you look at the pin it's extremely long which if I didn't know better was either Georgian or Victorian. As you can see it's marked B.I so there is no denying it is his work, therefore I was thinking it is a very early piece by him. Looking at the theme the monkey holding a blue agate ball and on the other side a snake, I was wondering If there is a story to be told. I've looked on the web and found nothing, therefore I'm hoping that my CW friends will have some ideas.

    Many thanks for looking.

Thanks kyra, I'm hoping it as something to do with folklore, we shall see. I have a great respect for snakes as long as there away from me, lol.

      Another great find Jean!
I had a quick look for fables on a snake and a monkey and found one by Aesop. I don't know if it relevant.
The only other thing I found is the Chinese zodiac association which promotes the snake and monkey as harmonious; meaning a great relationship.

Hi Karen, there is definitely a connection with Chinese mythology. I put the link above because I found it interesting, I enjoyed reading it. I haven't looked at Aesop tales but I'll certainly look into it. Thanks for your help.
