    katherines…
    (247 items)

So I posted these vintage hair clips before, and probably I was too subtle when asking what they were made of, lol. But that's because I didn't really think it was possible but I'll put it out there anyway and ask: The round bodies on these pretty little ladybugs, could they possibly be Pools of Light quartz? Thanks for looking.

MYSTERY SOLVED: Took another look at these today out in the sun and have come to the conclusion that these are some form of very clear plastic cabochons. Thanks to all for your help! :)

      Hi Katherine,

It's my understanding that 'pools of light' or rock crystals, are perfect spheres, or orbs. Your pretty ladybugs have a cabochon shape.

      Buuugggs! Kath, they are adorable!
Yep, Gillian is right... Cabochons, not spheres.
Pool of light are undrilled beads :-)

Thanks for the love, jscott0363, Vintageforever, beyemvey, Caperkid, Manikin, kyratango, aura, and Efesgirl.

Hi Gillian and kyratango, and thank you both. I can't figure out what these are, then. They aren't plastic, and they aren't glass. They are a clear stone with all the qualities of Pools of Light as I understand them to be. But I also don't think they are Pools of Light. So what could they be?

Katherine, are these the ones where the view is turned upside down???? If so, posted this link to Bonnie's post regarding a stone in a ring of hers that did the same thing!! (If not, just delete please lol).

Judy, thanks so much for the link to that thread! Yes, as you can see in the information there, while many people mistakenly think only pools of light turn an image upside down, any sort of glass-like lens given the right conditions will do that. My stones do that as well, but the clarity is startling and I think that's what's meant when discussing the reflective quality in pools of light. There are other qualities as well which they share in common, such as throwing reflection on a background when light is shone through the stone, also not uncommon to other materials but in pools of light uncommonly clear. The defining characteristic would have to be the material itself, is it plastic, glass, or stone. Judging by temperature and look (surface and inclusions), mine isn't plastic or glass. It is stone of some sort. What sort, I don't know.

Well, I've had another look out in the sun and think now that they are some sort of very clear plastic cabochon. Thanks to all my friends for offering their help. :)

      Lucite most likely.

Thanks for the love, TassieDevil, mikelv85, vetraio50, valentino97, kivatinitz, and JImam. :)

Thanks, Gillian, would Lucite be that clean and clear? The surface is remarkably free of damage.

      Thanks, kivatinitz, yes indeed. :)

      Indeed it would katherine.

Your cabochons are so reflective because they are backed with foil.

Thanks, Davy, not so much the reflectivity as the clarity that threw me off, glass often has bubbles, plastic isn't usually this clear and the surface has the typical scuffing, these don't have any damage or bubbles. They are clear and smooth, even in the sun. However, they are not cold to the touch, which stone would be, and not particularly heavy. I have to agree with Gillian, probably Lucite. Thanks to the both of you for your help, so very greatly appreciated. :)
