I think i may have posted about some of the artwork at this community before, but it case you don't know, these people are/were friends of mine and many of them lost their lives the other night. this is a huge tragedy for so many of us in east oakland, that it's difficult to even talk about it. some of the founders were collectors and they would put things together in very unusual/creative ways as you can see in these photos i took.
i can attest to how difficult it is to find safe, affordable housing in Oakland these days. Unfortunately, in their rush to provide artist space, the founders overlooked the 'safety' part of 'safe, affordable housing', and they are going to be crucified for that. that's another tragedy in this whole mess, because the more difficult problem of the lack of safe, affordable housing will be swept under the rug in their rush to crucify someone they can hold responsible.
My thoughts are with you and the familys that have lost good people in a very tragic way . Rest in peace
I thought about you when I hear this. I looked at all the pictures of it online. What a great (if dangerous) space. What a total tragedy. I have another artist friend Don Carlson who is an artist in Richmond (Ever heard of Homeless Don? It's one of his projects @ Rude Design).
So sorry for you loss (es)! I'm just across the bay, so I feel it too, though I didn't know anyone living there. It's just so horrible.
thank you Master and Celiene. yes, it's a horrific tragedy and severe loss for the whole community.
Very sad H02, I'm so sorry : ( At least you have your wonderful photos to remember them by.
thanks Rick.
Awful... I just had a look to know about the place and the tragedy... My thoughts go to the deceased and their families and friends... :-(
As you said, now there will be years of sueing and lawyer battle for seeking responsability...
Well-said.
This is J.K. Dineen from the San Francisco Chronicle. I'm working to do a deep dive into the culture, community, and evolution of the Ghost Ship space. I'm love to talk to you or any of your friends who lived there, if you feel like it. I'm at 415-777-7366.
thanks kyra and jkdineen. you can call me at 510-409-5858. if i can't talk at the moment, i'll call you back. i will never initiate the call - i've been getting zillions of them - both for the ghost ship and for my businesses and i answer when i'm driving or doing something where i can easily answer.
OMG - they are talking about all the victims on the news. I can't take anymore. Not one more thing.
there were lots of people w/ really good energy there - very diverse community of artists. i feel so awful for the people who died. they were all really just starting to pull their lives together as artists.
Very sad...my thoughts go out to those who lost their lives and to their families...Thank you for your pictures.
