The son, who seems to be partial owner in one of the businesses in the letterheads from my town of Muskegon (one is based in Minnesota but had an office here), writes to his father who seems to have interest for trading his land for a farm in Kansas, and the son asks him to mention the idea to other farmers.
Really, it's about trying to send people to Kansas.

    Written out in chronological order:

    Mar 30 1889
    Dear Father
I have neglected to answer your letter for some time.
But I have been waiting to learn all I could about this trade.
We have a house which is held at $1800 and rents for $16 a month readily. I told the man if he would raise the $200 to pay the mortgage that we would talk trade.
If you could raise the mortgage on your farm there would be no difficulty in trading. You see Bird has a mortgage of $225 on the house and lot now he must raise that and have money enough left to buy farming tools, team and etc.
The house I speak of is a very desirable one to rent. Consider this and let me hear from you. All well
    H J Critchett + Co.

    Other letter:

    June 31 1889
Dear Father, Youre at [hand?] of the 218th.
Would like to [send?] cousin [Arabela?]?
But [????????] is so arrogant that I can't come. We can I think trade your farm alright. Can do more when Spring opens. am very busy now with City Collections. upwards of $30000.00 is being put into our hands.
Do you know of anyone else who want trade for Farms in Kansas. worth from $500 to $3000. We own several such ones and have a number of others [to?] sell. If you can send me the address of some such persons. I will be very thankful. Ella is not well is quite sick now. Hope this finds all well I [remane??]
    H. J. Critchett

    ---------

I have come into many antique paper items from 1860 to very recent years from several families and people that all relate to the Critchett family. You will see me posting a few items over time, including letters from a soldier who was in the Civil war (letters all dated between 1864 and 1867) and, on Dec. 24 (98 years to the date of its being written), a letter from what I think is a WW1 soldier trying to get home after the war.
A large box of paper items showing much Critchett family history that cannot otherwise be known for $3. Score indeed. Sadly, the family didn't know what was in this box which likely would otherwise have been thrown out.
