These are not seen too often... this 3 handled porcelain cup is from Tancred Commandery No. 48 in Pittsburg, PA., and commemorated the 27th Triennial Conclave of the Grand Encampment, held in that year. One side bears the inscription, the next has a picture of their Temple, and the third panel depicts a medal. It was made by the American China Company in Toronto, Ohio. There is a small chip to the rim on the back, which does not detract too horribly. I was glad to find it in any condition. These also apparently came in blue, pink, and green glazes in addition to the yellow.

Interesting reading about the ceremonial use of the cup at the lodge:

Yes Vetraio, the ceremonies are pretty old... The Ancient York Rite of Freemasonry traces its origins back to a charter granted to Masons in York by King Athelstan in Saxon times. The oldest surviving document, the Regius Poem from the 14th century, references this charter. It is in the King's Library at the British Museum. It is a long read, but interesting to scholarly types... fortunately there is a website with a modern English translation side by side with the Old English... http://www.freemasons-freemasonry.com/regius.html - Cheers! - Bob
