    LOUMANAL
    (436 items)

I'm trying to get more information on this 3 1/2" tall by 3 1/2" diameter (including handles) vase that is simply stamped, "Made in Japan". I went through 40 pages of Japanese listed vases on eBay and as many on other auction sites but I couldn't find anything similar. Is there a name for this type of pottery or would anyone know the maker in Japan. It's very Art Deco and reminds me of American native pottery designs. Any help appreciated. RER

I call this sort of ware Japanese Export to separate it from traditional Japanese pottery. It is probably safe to say that none of the pieces marked "Made in Japan" were intended for Japanese consumption. As for dating the piece (or mark), there are several opinions but most pieces marked "made in" date from after 1921. Other than that, style is probably a better indicator of age than the mark. Because of the Deco/Egyptomania style of this piece, I would guess it likely dates from the early 1930s. The specific manufacturer may never be known.

The style and quality of the decoration makes me think this was likely created by one of the Satsuma manufacturers of the Osaka region, but just a guess.
