The type bars are quite remarkable on the Fitch, in that they are hinged and flop freely sideways when coming down to print. The two sloped guides ensure that the type bars are brought down to the common printing point.

This design gave visible writing, with the type bars swinging down from behind the carriage, but in so doing the paper must be contained entirely within the carriage which was an added complexity to the design.
