This silver denier of Louis VIII & IX is of the châtel tournois type. The obverse legend "+ LVDOVICVS REX" surrounds a central cross. The reverse legend "+ TVRONUS CIVI" surrounds a depiction of either the reliquary of St. Martin, the Abbey Church Of St. Martin, or the town gate of Tours. (Scholars disagree). These were struck c. 1223 - 1226 AD. Louis VIII was my 24th great-grandfather, through his son Robert, Count of Artois and younger brother of St. Louis IX.
