I recently added a cast aluminum arrow, and did my best to paint it and artificially "wear" it to match.
From the 1926-27 NJ Highway renumbering....
These cast aluminum shields measure only 16.5" in diameter, and were typically posted close to the ground, sometimes just a foot or two high.
NJ State Route 27 presently extends from Newark to Princeton. Before the 1950s, when this sign was in use, Route 27 ran all the way south to Trenton.
