This is quite possibly one of my favorite Baccarat vases; it just arrived today, and I really need to find a perfect place to display it. The entire vase has a wonderful sense of movement to it, which I just love. The three swallows are swooping around the vase, and the watercolor-like rust orange and yellow enamel accentuates their movement with its lines.
I just finished teaching a group of 5 and 6 year-olds about Renoir last week at a school art event, and about the sense of movement you get from his impressionistic paintings; it struck me as soon as I saw this vase that it really epitomizes this technique.
It is a heavy vase of opaline glass, set in an ormolu base; the bottom of the glass is finely ground and numbered in rusty red. It measures just over 8 1/2" tall x 5 1/2" in diameter. (The seller kindly allowed me to use their photographs - thank you!)
It is a wonder Michelle.
The swooping swallows are fantastic in their evening sky, yet grounded by the subtle vegetation near the base.
Masterful! Congratulations.
well its delicate artistic fantastic & yours Michelle
I just love the contrast of the little blue flowers to the red sky. A beautiful object!
This is beautiful, Michelle. The artist has captured the swooping flight of the swallow perfectly, on a delicate background that lets the swallows shine.
Thank you so much, Karen - I am really happy you like it. I like the drama of the scene, too! :)
Thank you, Malkey - I do see it as an art piece as well. :)
Bob, thanks so much - aren't the blue flowers just the little touch it needed? :)
Thank you, sklo - the movement in this piece is what drew me in - I just love it! :)
