This is an 18ct white & yellow gold cocktail ring with a large 17 x 9mm Coober Pedy semi-translucent crystal opal of about 3.8cts.
It's a big blingy ring that covers nearly a whole finger joint, the top is 22.5mm long.
These retro cocktail rings were intended for evening wear back in the day, however these days "Bling is In" and you can get away with wearing them all the time.
This one is a lovely design, the white gold and diamond setting almost looks like it's Edwardian or Belle Epoque, however turn it over and you'll see the "basket setting" often used in circa 1980's rings.
It was probably Australian made, it's clearly stamped GDNS in an oval, I'd be interested if anyone can identify the maker.
That opal!
I also have a gold peridot ring stamped GDNS just like that super keen to find maker
Hi Paul, may I ask you your opinion on my big crazed opal (I think Coober Pedy) there:

Did you hear about improving the cracks by oiling? Here is the result:

I'm always delighted to visit your somptuous opals :-))
Wow! That's one pretty ring..overall!..!
Years later and totally by accident I came across the maker which turns out to be a New Zealand company: Gardones, their website is here: https://www.gardones.co.nz
