This offensive carte de visite was made during the early part of the Civil War by the New York firm of Appleton.
It depicts a blackface man portraying a contraband (military term for slaves that had escaped). The cartoon is inked as "A reliable contraband blacking boots."
The Appleton backmark is typical of their Civil War production and the lack of a tax stamp probably puts this one as pre- mid 1864.
Thanks tom and vetraio!
