Unable to make out just what it says on this cuff link any takers? I would like to think that the end says 1880? But im not sure. Any info much appreciated thanks guys!

I did some invertigative work with the photo on my laptop.....and it says:
" PAT. AUG. 24 1880 "
It may also be gold, or some gold on it

What info ive gathered on cuff links is that 1880 was the first year they were made? Is this true?
Also I can seee what appears to be the letter S & C..maybe?
