My great-great grandmother brought this with her from the Shetland Islands (Scotland) in 1910 when she migrated. She only brought a small number of keepsakes with her, most of which had some connection to her church (she was a Primitive Methodist). It's about 10cm/4" tall and is smooth on the bottom with the same finish as is visible in the photo. Any ideas as to what it is would be most welcome.
I have no idea. I thought it looked like a Chess Piece -- but maybe something from the church,
Nothing on the bottom? As I was thinking an Envelope press of seal or something...??

It's a beautiful little piece of turned wood. The only thing that comes to mind is a stocking darner but it would have lots of little scratches on the bottom and around the rim. Darners are usually bulbous, not flat on the end, but some do have a concave area in the end so a flat-ended one is a possibility.
