I used this 1844 sheet music example on the cover of my newsletter in 2006
Instead of the old images of Thomas Nast--this unsigned illustration is a true shocker and image smasher!! Santa wears a crown of liquor bottles and sips a glass of the same . The cover is signed "Smyth" There are some odd elves under the bottom of his upraised glass. The song was composed by J. Augustine Wade. To complete the cover I photocopied a bit of the song's beginning and added it to the bottom...The original was in the London Times 1844.
The song title is " A JOLLY OLD CHRISTMAS" Looks like Santa was going to be sure it was--at least for him! Not the best image maybe of my publication cover--but you can see that Christmas in the distant past was not quite as "sober" as we may have thought!
PLEASE SEE BOTH IMAGES, In # 2 you might enlarge and play it!
That picture on the cover is really GREAT!!!!! Wish I could play piano now:)
