My dad found this knife years ago in a parking lot.
The year was 1962 or 63. I believe it is brass. There is an "S"
On one side of the knife near the figures' feet. The design looks East Indian, and maybe of the Hindu god, Vishnu. Any help or info would
Be appreciated!
Thanks!
The figure is Suvannamaccha, a mermaid princess in Thai mythology. Vishnu is something completely different.
Being that old this knife may be from Thailand. There are similar, newer ones frequently seen on ebay which are made in Pakistan. The blade and handles are all "white" brass which, of course, does not make a good knife blade. Suvannamaccha's image is supposed to bring good luck so this is more of a talisman than a piece of cutlery.
Thank you so much for the info! I was also thinking it could be from an Asian country. Is the knife worth anything? My dad does not use it. It is just a pretty piece.
There are several (at least three) similar designs I have seen; the figures on some have legs rather than a tail. Serious knife collectors will not pay much for one - maybe up to $15 - but sometimes they sell for more. There is currently one offered on ebay for $250. That will never happen. :-)
Good to know. It will go back into the hutch I'm sure. I will pass this info onto my dad. Thanks for your help!
