Hello CW friends!!
My wife totally surprised me and gifted me with this wonderful vintage cast iron Dachshund boot scraper on Christmas day. She said that she had seen me admiring this boot scraper, in an old local antique shop, on a couple of occasions and decided to make it my Christmas gift.
She couldn't have done any better, as far as Christmas gifts go. I love this big fellow!! He's over 21" long, stands 7 1/2" tall and is 7 1/2 inches at his widest point. He's solid and weighs in at a whopping 27 lbs!!! So, you wouldn't want to stub you toe on this guy.
I do not know the age or make of this boot scraper, but perhaps one of you may be able to tell me a bit about him and approximately how old he is. So far, based on web searches, I believe this big fellow was made around 1930 or so.
He still retains quite a bit of his original paint, even the original red paint inside his mouth remains. Though a lot of his original paint is not all there, he still looks great to me.
Thanks everyone for stopping to have a look at my Dachshund boot scraper!!
Scott
Come on down Rob!! Thanks very much. I have had a small reproduction of this boot scraper for about 15 years now. But, this is the first original I've ever owned. I'm thrilled to add him to my collection!
Your wife did great...he's wonderful!
Bonnie,

Kurt,

Yes, it is in very nice condition for its' age!! However, this one will not go outside. I'll keep it with my best doorstops. Thanks again!!
this is so great! i know i've seen it before - when i was young.
He's wonderful Scott; picked by a gem for a gem!
Now why does it sound like I'm sneezing when I say dachshund?
That is a great gift. She did well.
Scott,
This is great!! I love it.
Your wife is wonderful.....she does buy some great pieces for you.
ho2cultcha,
Thanks!! I remember these as a child as well. There were a few different styles of these. Some with a tongue, like what Hubley made, and some were actually anatomically correct.
Karen,
Thanks so much! You're very kind. Oh, and "Gesundheit":)
fortapache,
Thank you! She did do well. It was quite a surprise. It was a bit heavy for her to wrap, so one of my boys had to carry it in on Christmas morning!
Judy,
Thank you!! She is quite the sweetie! She's really developed a good eye for this sort of stuff. She does knows the kind of things I love!!

When I first saw the photo Scott, I thought to myself, how could somebody use this without knocking it over. Then I saw the size and the weight... wow is it big and heavy! Congrats on your wonderful Christmas gift :-)
Rick,
Thanks!! It's so long that I had to lie on the floor to photograph it:) He's so heavy that my wife had to get one of my sons to carry it in on Christmas morning!!!!

SEAN,
Thanks for the appreciation and for stopping by!!
OMG, how cool is that of your wife? I'm sure you love it and need it. Getting the boots off can be quite the task with your hands full coming in from the weather. I love it!!
There is a cast iron alligator one here in a local shop for $30.00 and they have it marked as a boot remover. It really works! If you put the heal of the boot in the mouth while standing on the back you don't have to bend over. Give it a try!
Thanks Tonja!!
I also have a smaller size reproduction of the Dachshund boot scraper as well. We paid something like $20 for that one. The old cast iron boot jacks also came in a variety of creatures from crickets to mermaids. There are a lot of reproductions available on the market today for a pretty low price. But, the repros are really easy to spot. The castings are really rough and they also have pretty rough edges. Thanks for the comment, the love and for dropping by. Many thanks!!!
Thank you all very much for the loves and for stopping by!!
