This is my no. 1 find of 2016. A garnet necklace and bracelet with golden clasp with 3 garnets. Condition is good.
No marks but tested for 14k.
I don't know how old this set is.
At the fleamarket they were asking € 5,00 (US$ 5,20) for the set.
Which I paid very quickly.
Very pretty!
LOL I bet!! Paid, grabbed the necklace and ran away! Just like I do.
:-)))))))
Oh, and the bracelet, too....
Lucky you! I love both!
Wow! That's a bargain!
The garnets are beautiful and you got a perfect set :-)
These are two very nice pieces of 19th century (i carefully would think app. 1850-1870) garnet jewelry.
If you look closely, you can see, that it seems the collier is missing a strand. Originally there were probably four strands as on the bracelet, but it was tastefully rearranged to three strands. Somebody really loved those pieces!
The garnets of your pieces are of the "old" quality, dark blood red, with a hint of violet. No way you can find this quality today in the mines of India or South America.
Garnets were made popular (again) by Empress Elizabeth (Sissi) of Austria during the 1850's. She visited the garnet mines in Bohemia during her honeymoon and instantly fell in love with the beautiful stones. So much, that she ordered a parure (matching set of earrings, collier, bracelet and ring) which she wore during a royal court event. Seeing her wearing those beautiful stones on a dress made of white Atlas-silk, everyone wanted garnets and so garnets became popular again.
What a wonderful and absolutely fantastic bargain!!!
