Just a hunch- No proof at all-this fellow many have been injured in the Civil War, captured and malnourished, etc? Or maybe not. He is pitifully small in the jacket he wears,, for a robust, broad-shouldered person supposedly before he saw action, his cheeks are actually sunken in,( better seen in the photo!! OMG! )and his eyes whispered to me, he has seen too much!! He is photographed in Keosauqua, Iowa, Civil War Stamp on card --with a date at time of cancel, 5-15 1865. You may not see it plainly as I can. Were they mustered out by then?
NOTE---- Yes , I know I am just suggesting &-way out of the box and off my chain. Relax.
-Please, nay-sayers, READ MY OPENING SENTENCE AGAIN.
I hear a rumbling thru the ranks saying "Well Lois, he could have gotten a jacket to wear from the photographer"!! I say " Yes, could be" and maybe not!

Close to home for me....Iowa is just a hop-n-skip.... LOVE it and Happy New Year
From where do you "hop and skip" from? Wisconsin and Illinois to the east, Missouri to the south, Nebraska and South Dakota to the west, and Minnesota to the north. My guess , hummmm---South Dakota?? Me and my hunches! Ha ha, Thank God I am not a gambler!!
He does appear to be painfully thin and he has a very haunting look in his eyes as well. Very haunting photo!
THANK YOU!!! SO MUCH!! Someone agrees-ahhhhhh!
Happy New Year !!!!!!!

Happy New Year! Group Hug!! Thanks All.
Or he just has 'that' bone structure like many other folks (including my own family) and they put some rouge on his face to add liveliness-- which backfired. He looks fine to me.
