    AutoPinbac…
    (21 items)

I have been an collector for many years of transportation memorabilia, signs, clocks, pinback buttons, ect. I have noticed recently how many fake pinback buttons are appearing on eBay, as well as signs, ect. This particular example in above photos is a perfect example. This seller is representing this button as very old. This button, if authentic has sold for a few hundred dollars. It is very obvious to me, it just came off the press fresh. The pin is not correct, no aging to reverse whatsoever, lot of problems. However to the unseasoned collector, it may look great. Buyers are unknowingly paying ridiculous amounts of money on a fake item. Unfortunately there is no way to contact these bidders. Years ago, I would contact bidders and give them heads up. I have even contacted sellers about there deceitfullness. Unseasoned collectors be careful, do your homework on whatever you are collecting, buy reference books, talk to other collectors, learn as much as you can, ect. Get as much knowledge as possible, before making big purchases. Unfortunately, this type of deceitfullness, turns some collectors from hobby permanently, when they do find out they have a fake or fantasy item. Buyers Beware!

Thanks for the heads up, I too see so much stuff on ebay selling that is questionable. I follow porcelain signs regularly and have noticed that here are a lot of repros with distressing to make them look old hitting the market. It is sad because it begins to affect the value of authentic pieces. One of the things I do is always check the sellers other items, and completed items. You can see if they are selling the same thing repeatedly. Also where they are located. The sign market is be flooded right now with fakes from india.

Rocker-sd, Thanks for your comments and I agree 100 percent with everything. yes I too collect signs as well and you are so right the market is flooded. I see lots of coke signs, Chevrolet signs, ect, that I know for sure are fake and some fantasy pieces as well. You are a smart collector, an obviously well seasoned, because if they have several that is the first red flag. It is just really frustrating that eBay has a system now set up where you cannot warn or contact other members. It not only affects value of authentic signs it also turns a lot of would be collectors from hobby when they get burned.

This is beyond true. I've also encountered many people doing this. It's hard to believe that someone would do this to another, but this is no surprise at all. I'm really glad you're bringing light to this situation.

Sad but True, It's always helpful to see the back side to help make the call,
Even with the newer federal Law that requires the clear marking of reproduction button's I know of one who has been selling fake WWII (and now fake Vietnam) button's for years on ebay I won't say his user name but it starts with "Great" but still no way to warn others, It's one thing to sell and buy knowing it is a re-pop if your into them but some make the effort like the seller noted who will use pins from the era or look to be anyhow with newly printed reproduction paper under the celluloid. Buyer beware for sure. SAD!
If in doubt ask Ted he literally wrote the book(s) on buttons and or see the APIC site APIC = American Political Items Collectors they have several pages of reproductions and what to look for. (in most cases)
I've gone as far as to contact some sellers in case they were not aware of what they were selling however most the time they stick with there story.
      Thanks for the post.
      Peace

Hi, PoliticalPinback! Nice to to hear from you. I agree with everything you stated. When I contacted sellers. I, like you, you received in most cases, the same kind of response. Frustrating to no end. Great, that even though you did not state the scam eBay sellers full name. You gave enough clue to give everyone an heads up. Thank You for that. I too, am a member of Apic. If you collect pinbacks, even it is not political, it is a superb group to belong to. Finally, Ted Hake is the man when in doubt. I personally have had dealings with him, as well as a friend of mine. PoliticalPinback stop by more often, Don't be a stranger.

Thanks I will try to make it on more often, I haven't had the pleasure to meet Ted in person just bought some button's from him both on fleabay and his website even have a Ted Hake button that I will post soon.
      Enjoy the hunt, John
      Peace
