I posted the one on the left before. i won the other one on ebay a couple months ago. i think it is a bit older than the other. it is signed w/ an impressed mark which says 'Mexico' on the base.
i wish we had a 'Mexican Pottery' category.
HAPPY NEW YEAR HO2 !!! ! !!!
Beautiful!!!
thanks kevin and vintagelamp!
I have one similar to the one on the left. It is marked Ladislao, who I found out was one of the early 'master' potters of Mexico. This pot is all most identical to mine. Tonala matte finish piece. They are both stunners! Old, too.
I doubt that the design on these two pots are derived from the Aztec culture as I don't think the Aztecs got as far west as Jalisco. Perhaps the Purepecha and/or the Tonaltec cultures are more responsible. Also, due to pre-Colombian trading with Asia on the west coast of Mexico, these designs might reflect that influence.
thank you rodolfo. it's actually called 'Aztec' and is a very collectible line of pottery from Tonala. they were produced in the 1930s/40s.
Rodolfo: here is my collection of Mexican pottery i've put together over the last 6-7 yrs: http://www.collectorsweekly.com/user/ho2cultcha/mexican-pottery
and here is probably my most special piece: http://www.collectorsweekly.com/stories/108569-very-large-mexican-urn--burnished-birds?in=collection-3602
