Hello, I found my great grandfathers WW1 Helmet, he was part of the 77th Infantry Division out of NYC. I have been looking all over and cannot find another helmet with the US flag painted on it, not sure if it was some sort of marker to tell the difference between MOS's or whatnot. It still has the liner on it, also wondering why the unit patch has a larger blue area on the front.

      Great helmet!

Most of these heavily painted helmets were done after the Armistice and represent a souvenir/ diary of the conflict.

The flag and other patriotic emblems are typical of these pieces.

Your helmet is nice with the family history-- be sure to record it and keep it with the helmet.
