An old ad from pre 1800. Not sure what it means or the purpose it's like brand new looking people tell me they were used quite often to prevent fires

That looks like a vesta case, for storing matches. Is there a strike plate on the bottom?
What was used to prevent fires? Doesn't make any sense.

Looks like a vesta case (match safe) to me too...........that centre part with the advertising is probably celluloid!
I think the vestas, which were the matches of the day, were known to catch fire spontaniously so Vesta Cases were made......
