      Sea Snail. What beach? What's under the lid? Is this a pipe?

      not a pipe its a lid for a hole looks like some kind of art deco they made this out to be a fish of some kind. Was bought this way 15-20 years ago and not sure what the shell was its kind of thick.

      I've found my local museum has been really helpful with identifying natural specimens. I've emailed them photos of a few items and they've given excellent information. You could try emailing a museum near you a picture of the shell with measurements and see what happens.

      Look for Turbo Marmoratus. Anyway a Turbo kind shell :-)
