Badge 714 of the Los Angeles Police Department brings back memories
of the classic 1950's TV series, 'Dragnet'. In that popular police drama
series, Sgt. Joe Friday (played by Jack Webb) was assigned the memorable Badge 714.
The guy who actually wore badge 714 was a guy named Cook or Cooke. He helped Jack Webb with material for the show. When Webb died the LAPD retired that badge number. The badge and ID of Jack Webb were real LAPD equipment and are on display at the police academy.
PHONY BADGE: THERE WERE NUMEROUS 714 BADGES MADE AND USED DURING THE 67-70 SERIES. JACK WEBB WAS ALLOWED TO KEEP ONE, WHICH HE GAVE TO ME IN THE SUMMER OF 1982, MONTHS BEFORE HIS DEATH THAT DECEMBER. ALL BADGES USED WERE ONE PIECE STAMPED. THE BADGE PICTURED IS A FOUR PIECE BADGE: BACK WITH THREE PANELS. MOST IMPORTANTLY, THE FONT OF THE WORD "SERGEANT" IS ROMAN STYLE LETTERING WHEREAS THE GENUINE BADGES HAD BLOCK LETTERING.
