    Hello everyone.

These are Georgian reproduction pieces that I bought 2014/15 both from antique dealers in Tasmania. Both dealers were selling them as copies so I knew exactly what I was buying.
Both are marked 925 for sterling silver with tested rose cut diamonds in both with a ruby in the cross, real or synthetic??

As you can see they are both quite rough when you look up close.......but I wear them anyway just because I like them.

Anyway, these I guess are the ones from India or where ever.....it wasn't until I had bought the first piece which was the cross that I heard about the ones being made in India.......and then I started to see the cross and ring coming through Australian Auction sites........but not listed as anything but what they were.......sterling silver rose cut diamonds cross and ring!!!
Hope you find these interesting for reference in the future, thanks Judy

Interesting Judy, to be honest I wouldn't have a glue, they both have closed backs which would indicate Georgian. I have seen a lot of pieces of jewellery Georgian style I couldn't tell the difference. I bought a pair of earrings Georgian style very pretty, I knew they were not of that era, I also saw a similar pair that were being sold as Georgian, with a price to go with it.

      Judy,
Reproduction or not, they're both very wonderful pieces!
    3. Efesgirl Efesgirl, 8 years ago
I agree that they are indeed interesting! Rose cut diamonds are low grade, made from the scraps of other cut diamonds, so their intrinsic value is really low. I don't know about the "ruby"- you would have to have it tested.

Thanks Jean...... It really is getting to be difficult isn't it. I guess while we are not paying a big amount for something that is not genuine then it isn't so bad........
Have you seen this site below for repros of antique jewellery?

      Scott,
Thank you, I think they are not too shabby too, and I like to wear them, and the cost was very reasonable.......thanks again I really appreciate your comments on my posts!!

      Thanks Bonnie!
I did not know that about rose cut diamonds.......I thought it was a "cut" the same as Mine cut, brilliant cut etc!!!

That's a great Pinterest board Judy, I'm following it now.
I have a pendant I bought (very cheap) online advertised as Victorian. Pffft. Even I knew when I saw it that is was repro.
      These are much nicer!

Thanks Karen......I only found that Pinterest site this morning.....you never know when we might have to refer to it!!!
Seems we have to take all descriptions with a grain of salt......particularly online......happy with buying these ones locally for what they are......at least could have a laugh with the 2 sellers about none of us being able to afford the real deal LOL!!

Judy, thank you for this educationnal post!

I had a look to the Pinterest board.
Problem with some Indian sellers is they use pics of real antique pieces, even taken from high end auction houses... Some pics there are of real antique pieces, but of course, you don't get what you see...
They NEVER show back of these pieces...

I was scammed once with a Bzz Bzz brooch, seller answered it was silver on gold and rosecut diamond as on the pic, but I got a flat, uggly bee, sparkling of rhodium plated silver... Seller was desperate to get an as uggly feedback and tried what he could to get it removed... But he failed :-)))

Oh Pascale I did not realize that real pictures of antiques would be used!!! Wow, that makes it even more confusing doesn't it!!
It is really getting a bit rude isn't it when you see something you like and can afford, and then the damn seller is ready to rip you off with a fake.........that is mainly why I don't even look at overseas seller's items, not game to take the chance.....and just stick to my local sellers, my favourites that I know I can trust! They don't as a rule have the really spectacular items to sell, but i am happy with what I can buy from them.
I can imagine how wild you would have been not getting the brooch you were expecting!!! And good for you giving the seller what he deserved!!

      Judy, you are wise :-)
I knew I was buying a repro, not an antique, but was hoping at least looking as on the picture of the auction...

Interesting reading on this thread, thanks for sharing, Judy. We can all help each other and those readers and members who might learn from your experiences.

Thank you for posting this, it's very educational for beginning collectors to see examples of reproductions. I wish there was a Repro category on CW for antique fine and costume jewelry where we could accumulate a collection of numerous pieces that are currently on the market; it would no doubt be controversial since even the big sellers from the CW front page have an abundance of those among their offerings; on the other hand, an exchange of opinions and arguments on this matter would be of great assistance to CW members and collectors in furthering our education and will probably attract a great amount of new visitors an members.

On the issue of rubies, I posted a pic of a UV test here and hope you find it helpful: http://www.collectorsweekly.com/stories/215341-14k-gold-ring-c1970-with-a-lab-ruby--uv

I completely agree with Davyd, it would be very helpful to have a repro category and discuss our findings. It would be helpful for all of us.

I have had to learn as well over the years Pascale, as twice I have had my money taken and not received my item........and it has not even been a lot of money!! It makes me furious ........as usually the item is something that I really really wanted!!!
At least for the second one paypal refunded the money......but that still wasn't the point!!!

Thank you Katherine, I do hope it will be helpful to CW jewellery buyers!
    18. TassieDevil TassieDevil, 8 years ago
Thank you Davyd. I was hoping it would be ok to post as reproductions.
I was really prompted by jeans necklace ......and I must admit that India was my first thought when I saw it.
Anyway, I am glad that this has got people talking, which is a good thing and yes a Repro category would be great!!

Thanks as well for the ruby UV test too!!! I had forgotten that I knew about this (lol) and yes this ruby glows like crazy!!! so synthetic......

This is a great post. Before I saw this, I have been looking at the ring I posted and although it is big and there are diamonds, rubies and spinel (thank you kyra) I've been looking more closely at the enamel on the side and it's looking to me like someone added that afterwards. Then as I look at the top, the bezel looks uneven, which would be consistent with an original stone maybe being lost but then in a way it makes me wonder if it was done purposefully so that it looks old. I do sell online a bit of this and a bit of that, it's not a 'business' per se and I am one that want's to be sure of what I sell before I list it with as much info as possible and I keep it real by working hard to maintain a great reputation. I get so much help here it's great and this info you posted is just adding to it. I'm wondering since I have not had a ring with enamel on it that I can think of, well...I just have more inspecting and research to do on it. There is something about the ring that's making me wonder...thanks for your post!

Thank you Share, glad you have found it thought provoking and I really wish I could answer some of your concerns!!
As far as jewellery goes I am really way behind in the knowledge stakes and I hope that others can help to confirm or dismiss your fears.
I know it is a terrible feeling when you just can't put your finger on whatever it is that isn't right, but you just know there is something about it!!!
Hope you find out......I would like to know now too!!
