Purchased at an Estate Sale from a family that traveled to Europe on steam ships and were very weathy originally from Massachusetts.
It is very solid and heavy. Each lid of the inkwell has a tiny Griffin on it.
Question on side is for the ink... What's the other side for?
I unscrewed the internal top and pulled out a cylinder made of glass. Both inkwells look identical.
It's very cool and I placed it on an antique Plantation desk I aquired from savannah.
Let me know your thoughts.
Thank you
Leila
Could the other side be for sand? I seem to remember that people used to sprinkle sand on the ink to help it dry.
Sand? That's a new one. I really am going to look into it because it is the first inkwell I own but I could see that there are many very interesting styles. I don't know what I have for sure but I am thrilled to have it sitting on my antique desk. Thank you for your response.
