I bought this basket at a garage sale and paid very little. I bought it because I like things that look well loved (used). Obviously, it is damaged but and I have all the pieces from the rim. Not sure if I would try to put it back together as I like the look of the basket as is. Would you be so kind as to identify the mystery basket. Thinking Native American but I don't have a clue. I Would love to know anything I could about it. It is 13 inches heigh by about 17 inces long. It's kind of oval/round. There are some remnants of leather that run around the top rimof the basket. Also, there are not any markings or patterns inside of the basket. Thanking you in advance.

It is Native American, a coiled cedar basket from Washington, with an imbricated design.

If the bottom is round, and has a "watch-spring" start, it is most likely from the Plateau region, possibly Klickitat. If it is oval, and has an oval start, it is probably from Western Washington, usually referred to as "Cowlitz," although several neighboring tribes made the same style.

Just based on what I can see in the photo, without being able to see the bottom, and with most of the rim gone, it appears most likely that it is from Western Washington.

Thank you so much for the information. Amazing!
I took a close look and the bottom appears to be oval, mystery solved:). Now I will enjoy my basket and have a great story about where it came from.
