Veterinary fleams, or "bleeders" were used by striking the back of the blade with a stick called a "blood stick," as opposed to bleeders for humans which were smaller and usually powered by a spring.

    1A. Graduated 3-blade fleam by H. G. Long & Co. / Sheffield. 3 1/4" long closed.

1B. Folding "thumb lancet" - slides into the pocket in the handle of 1A. Thumb lancets, often sold individually, were used for animals and humans.

    2. Large 2-blade fleam by Winter / Bristol. 4" long.

    3. 4 1/4" Geo. Wostenholm IXL horseman's knife with fleam under the rear handle.

    4. This is NOT a fleam but it is often advertised as one. It is an ink eraser & envelope slitter made by Stephens & Pat'd. Nov. 16, 1869.

Thank you, whyatt. Collecting and studying folding knives is the one hobby that has held my interest for over three decades. I think of my collection as a "reference" tool and I'm always happy to share what I have learned with anyone who is interested.
