These two beautiful vases belonged to my Grandparents, who I lived with, my Grandpa was an avid collector of beautiful things, art, books, ceramics, jewellery. They lived in a big Victorian house with high ceilings and I always admired and loved loved them as a child, now I am trying to find out about them, I've looked on some sites but can't see anything similar, I would love to know the history behind them. The flowers on the vases are made with tiny glass beads and have gold around them. The bottom stamp says, I think, KINRAY with a patent no. Japan.

You have a nice pair of Japanese Coralene vases 1910-1920'S date range. If you look up Japanese Coralene you will find lots of examples. Very collectable at auction $500 or higher each depending on the size and condition. I have several piece in my collect but mine is Sharkskin Coralene the whole surface was covered it was very expensive at the time to make so wasn't produced very long. That when they went to just having areas just being done in the Coralene process but was still costly to do.

      Hi grendel67,

CW'ers are not permitted to offer appraisals.

Hi Gillian. this is not an appraisal by grendel. he is simply stating that Coralene is very collectable and goes for $500 and up at auction. that is not an appraisal for a specific item, but an observation of values achieved at auction for this category of Japanese porcelain. i really think that CW goes a bit overboard about discussion of values, but let's not call this conversation an 'appraisal'.

I am sorry Gillian I was just trying to emphasize how very collectable this type of pottery was. I was just wanting to help the person to know that Coralene is not something put in a yard sale for a buck. Not that I wouldn't buy it if it was in a yard sale.

Thank you so much, for this information, to know they are Coralene, I really appreciate it. It's so interesting, I want to find out more now. I'm wondering if they made just individual pieces or lots of the same design?
    10. grendel67, 8 years ago
My guess is that they made so many of same style maybe changing the colors and sizes so you should be able to find similar pieces to what you have. But I would not be surprised if they made one of kind pieces for customers. If I get a chance this week I will post a one of my pieces of sharkskin Coralene I have.
