Hi, Can anyone tell me what STYLE of chair these are? Along with a companion (but not exactly matching) loveseat, these belonged to my grandmother at least since the early 50's, judging from old photos, and later passed to my aunt and then my mom and now to me and my siblings. They are "mirror images" - the back of one swooshes to the left and the other's swooshes to the right. You can see the leg style in the old photo (with my Gram & Gramps)! My grandmother always called them her French chairs but I am curious as to the style. Also is there an appropriate term to describe the shape of the back? As you might surmise from above, I just call them swoosh-backs! They were reupholstered at least twice and clearly the wood was stained at some point, and they are in excellent condition. Thanks!

It's French Provincial. I'd say a parlor chair. Really nice - much better than the original! Here's something somewhat similar... They say it's Louis 15th style. I think you are right about the 1950's. French Provincial was all the rage.

Here's another 1940's regency style mirror pair.

These were quite popular apparently! They call them hollywood regency asymmetrical fireside chairs. 1940's-50's. Yours are quite spectacular!
