Many years ago my Mother had a friend with a wacky sense of humor. She passed away many years ago. One day she gave my Mother this little elephant cup with a little troll doll inside. My Mother asked her what it was, what it meant? With a mischievous smile she said something like "someday you'll figure it out". Well, it's been 35 years or more and my Mom still hasn't figured it out. While we're pretty confident the cup has no real value my Mom would still like to know if there's any story, any meaning associated with this weird little cup. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

LOL! It is cute but I think it's a planter, not a cup. Made in the mid-century. No story associated with it that I can think of. I think the meaning of the gift was some sort of personal joke between your mom and your friend - don't think any of us would know.

Here's another one with a dog:

Such a quirky piece Rick! Although it's obviously a planter, I still like it as a coffee mug :-)

Thanks, think it would be a bit awkward to drink from.

Yeah Rick, I'm sure would be awkward. I just think it's so cool it would be nice to use as a mug :-)

You mentioned a troll doll......perhaps the story goes with that??
I will have my 2cents worth here and say that the elephant does seem to have two big teeth....so perhaps this is a toothpick holder........

Well, Efesgirl's link to one like it seems to be the answer, it is likely a planter, there's a zillion of them out there. I couldn't imagine a "planter" this small but it seems to be the case.
