I had to buy this basket as it's a décor I've not seen before. The handle is the Welz take on a thorn handle......I have a few. The base is typical of Welz baskets......rough pontil. Stripes coming from the centre, like spokes of a wheel, are also seen on knownWelz striped décors. Finally the pink interior is a pink I have on another Welz Item. The green is not aventurine.
So, not the most beautiful basket ever seen, but another Welz striped décor for my collection. I could only hazard a guess on its period so I'm leaving that alone!
This is very cool... I've never seen this décor before either.
Thank you welzebub......I always appreciate 'cool' :)
I had this on my watch list! I thought it was something different & it has my favourite colour combination of pink & green, too. Glad to see that it's now part of your fabulous collection!
I'm glad it didn't get to the top of your list, IronLace. Thank you for the lovely compliment :)
My pleasure! I was strongly considering a bid on this, but ended up going with something else...which will hopefully turn up in a few weeks! All I will say is that it's seriously fancy... :-)
A little treasure basket !
Thank you PhilD :)
Oh, what a cool one!! I have never seen one like it before - what a terrific find, sklo! You are so good at hunting out the especially unusual Welz pieces! :)
Thank you for your kind words, Michelle. Nowadays it's the rarer shapes and décors that interest me.....so I suppose I'll be posting less Welz!
I've not come across this decor before and wouldn't have known it was Welz. I'm seeing stripes everywhere this morning!
Stripes are the new black! Actually it was the handle that caught my attention as I have that style of thorn handle on about six baskets in known Welz décors.
I have a basket with the same décor....only I believe the one I have has adventurine in the green. I will try to post soon as I keep telling myself it is time to start posting my pieces!!!!!!
Glad to hear from you, cornhusker, I always enjoy your posts!
Very nice Peggy, congrats! You must be thrilled to find a Welz piece with a unknown decor... I'm sure that makes it extra special :-)
Hi Rick, it's not that unusual to find unknown décors here, as Welz shipped an awful lot of glass to the UK in the Victorian/Edwardian period. That said some finds are particularly pleasing and this was one of them :-)
