There seemed to be a small focus on snakes lately so I thought I'd add one more.
Petoskey Stone is the "State Rock" of Michigan. It is fairly commonly found as "pebbles" along the banks of Lake Michigan after the Spring thaw. Because it is reasonably soft and works well without flaking, it has long been used by local crafts people. It is often found crafted as various types of jewelry - occasionally as carved figural objects.
One of the most amazing of those carvers of Petoskey Stone was Henry Amrhein, who, in the first half of the 20th Century, made hundreds of fantastic pieces. I feel privileged to have this snake - one of his exceptional pieces.
This hand-carved and polished snake measures roughly 3" by 2".

Petoskey is the fosilised remains of a colony coral that once inhabited the shallow salt sea that was my state. You don't see many big pieces anymore, but you find a lot of small pieces everywhere on the West side.
