    I inherited this from my mother 18 years ago. She loved to collect antique jewellery and other items .
    This is a beautiful silver piece approx 6 cms x 4cm
    It has a a small loop for a chain and flip lid.

      It is a vesta case, a box made to contain vestas (short matches) and keep them dry.
      If there are no marks (search for them) then it`s silver plated, but could be silver.
      Extensively made in late 19th century until 1920s.

      Is there a striker on the bottom, or side? A nice look for a watch fob.

      Thank you so much fto everyone for their wonderful information :-) very much appreciated!! it is fascinating to learn the history of some of these items that i inherited. There does not appear to be any marking on the base as far as i could see.
