Nothing more beautiful than turned burl.

Gorgeous. Reminds me of silky oak but I don't think you get them in the States!
    6. ho2cultcha ho2cultcha, 8 years ago
thank you racer and nuts! this may not be an american piece, so silky oak might be a possibility. the wood is extremely hard and turned perfectly evenly thin throughout.

is there a category for treenware somewhere?

My father in law does some wood turning, but don't know if he has done any with burl. He has made me several pieces and I especially like the spalted ones because of all the variations. I love the look of yours!

thank you Mrstyndall. it's been suggested on another site that the wood in this might be amboyna. ??

i found out that this piece is Chinese from Yunnan province and a very rare piece. the wood is nanmu burl - and probably from the Qing dynasty.
    13. Celiene Celiene, 8 years ago
Wow. Nanmu. But it looks machine turned. Can it be that old? When is Qing?
    14. Celiene Celiene, 8 years ago
I don't think that's it. Gold Phoebe Nanmu doesn't quite look like that. It does not have swirls like yours. It is more linear. Google image searching Phoebe Nanmu or Noble Nanmu doesn't bring up any like that. You bowl is much more spectacular pattern.
    15. ho2cultcha ho2cultcha, 8 years ago
there are different kinds of nanmu and this is an exact match for nanmu burl - from ones i saw online. Wood lathes are machines, but they go back at least to 1380 BC!!

this piece is not Chinese, but from Bhutan. It's a food container made from the highest quality of burl wood which can take any poison out of food. it's called a 'dapa'. here is lots more info and photos of other ones. http://www.ichcap.org/eng/ek/sub11/pdf_down/chapter05/05.3.1.Wood%20Turning.pdf

I love burled wood objects Ho2, and this is gorgeous... I love it!

thank you kyra and Rick! i solved the mystery w/ lots of help from people at CW and folks on the Collecting Chinese ceramics and art FB page!

i love burled objects too Rick, and this is one of the finest i've ever seen! this kind of wood - which i had never heard of before is the only wood which doesn't shrink and change shape over time - making it perfect for a covered bowl!
