Early barbed wire manufacturers soon learned that vicious barbs damaged livestock and so wire with rotating barbs were introduced. They remained popular up until the 1930s. The design patented by Chester Hodge seems to have been the most successful as more of it has been found than any other.
The vertical wires in this display are link wires that could be folded and put in a box for shipment rather than rolled up. The bottom two are chain links with rowel barbs.

      AWESOME displays Gatekeeper!!!
Some very fine wires. I get the shakes when I look at them.

Whoa!! Is that a 1603B, Mihill single strand? One of my favorites.

The 1603B Mihill is a splice (two separate wires spliced with a barb in between) unlike The only other one I have seen which has a separate wire wrapped around the barb on a single strand. The "Rattler" fence stretcher may have been made to tighten fences that had shaking barbs.

A nice wire to be sure... The 1603B and 738B have been on my "want list" for a long time. I like wires that are "outside" the box, especially the single lines.
