I found this imposing reproduction Japanese 3 panel oil painting of Ogata Korin's "Cranes"at Volunteer's of America. At first all I noticed were the side panels. The center panel was in a different section underneath a large heavy mirror. Thankfully the metal frame bore most of the weight of the mirror or it would have caused serious damage to the canvas had it slipped even an inch. The background has a heavy impasto texture washed in gold. The almost life size cranes stride across the three panels in various poses. Not sure if these represent an exact likeness of a certain species or just artistic license. I thought most cranes were white and black not vice-versa. The original label is still on the back stretcher priced and dated 12/08/82. It's in very nice condition for being 35 years old. There was no mention of an artist or title on the label. I imagine the Japanese characters and seal on the one side panel would solve that mystery. If anyone is able to translate them for me it would be greatly appreciated . -Mike-

I'm no expert but this looks like paintings made by Ogata Korin. I know that these populair paintings have been copied many times. The big questian now is: is this an original?

How very interesting.....Thanks so much for the info mp.kunst. That gives me a place to start my research. I'm not sure where this originally came from though whether it was a department store or gallery or how to authenticate it.

Well that was quick..... I found the exact picture. This would be a 20th century copy and no where near as old as the 17th century original . :)

What a nice, beautiful, great find!
Love this, and I would definitely hang it in my home :-D

The composition is so modern, nearly Art Deco, for the 17th century original painting!

Thanks so much Kyra. Yes, it is quite a good copy after seeing the original. Ogata Korin's style is timeless. :)
