Found this in tools from my boyfriend's grandfather. It swivels in the middle and it turns from either end. That's all I know.

It's a "turnbuckle". The threaded ends have opposite threading; when you turn the center it draws the ends together. It is used to create tension such as tightening a cable.
On aircraft, at least the centre barrel would have a hole for safety wiring.
